Sneferu was the founder of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt. He was married to Hetepheres I and was the father to Khufu, his succeeding pharaoh.

History[edit | edit source]

His founding of the fourth dynasty is considered the beginning of a golden age for Egypt, and he built at least three pyramids. The first was the Meidum Pyramid, which collapsed, and was followed by the Bent Pyramid, which saw a change in design. His final pyramid, considered his masterpiece, was the Shining Pyramid, in which he was buried, though he died before the edifice was completed.[1]

During his reign, Sneferu was also known for introducing polished stone to form the smooth slanting sides of the pyramids, as shown in his design of the Shining pyramid.[1]He also hid three small replicas of the pyramids, which, when inserted in the pyramidion of the Shining Pyramid, revealed the location of a vault containing a pyramidion and a set of ancient scrolls.[2]

These details were recorded by Manetho, a historian during 3rd century BCE, who documented it in his work Aegyptiaca. In 48 BCE, the Egyptian scholar Merkes eventually deciphered Seneferu's secrets with the help of the Medjay, Bayek.[2]
