Lerion (died 864) was an ealdorman from the House of Wuffingas who sought to claim the throne of Mercia from King Burgred during the 9th century.[1] He was a member of the Order of the Ancients and had three daughters: Cordelia, Regan and Goneril, all of whom sought revenge for his death.[2]

After seeking an alliance with Ælla of Northumbria and thegn Leofwine, he was betrayed by the latter, who reported his actions to King Edmund, getting a third of Lerion's estate as a reward. As a result, Lerion was arrested and executed for treason. Leofwine would subsequently arrive at his estate to detain his daughters and seize the land.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The story of Lerion is likely inspired by the legendary figure of the same name, which was used by the playwright William Shakespeare as the basis for his play King Lear.[3]
