Caesarion
Ptolemy XV Philopator Philometor Caesar (born 47 BCE), better known as Caesarion (Latin: Little Caesar), was the last Pharaoh of Egypt. He was the eldest son of Queen Cleopatra, and the alleged biological son of Roman consul Gaius Julius Caesar, after whom he was named.[1]
Biography
Early life
Born in 47 BCE, Caesarion moved to the Roman Republic with his mother, living on the outskirts of Rome.[2]
On 15 March 44 BCE, Caesar was assassinated by a group of Hidden Ones led by Aya, who by that point had adopted the name "Amunet", Marcus Junius Brutus, and Gaius Cassius Longinus. A few days later, Amunet went to confront Cleopatra in her residence while the latter was playing with Caesarion.[3]
Cleopatra angrily questioned Amunet's actions, remarking that Caesar's death had robbed her son of any chance of one day ruling Rome, only for the Hidden One to threaten her with her Hidden Blade, which caught the young Caesarion's attention. Before leaving, Amunet told Cleopatra to do her job as pharaoh of Egypt, or she would share Caesar's fate. Following Amunet's departure, a terrified Cleopatra went to comfort and embrace her son.[3]
Siege of Alexandria
By 30 BCE, Caesarion had moved back to Egypt with his mother and resided in Alexandria's royal palace. With Octavian's invasion imminent, Cleopatra had her guards train Caesarion in preparation for battle. However, after Amunet convinced the besieged Cleopatra that the best way to save Egypt was to take her own life, the queen asked the Hidden One to protect and train Caesarion. Amunet gave her word and took the young man with her. With Phoxidas' help, they departed Alexandria and set sail for Rome.[4]
Legacy
In 2012, Caesarion was included in a mnemonic set in Abstergo Industries' Project Legacy.[5]
Behind the scenes
His name, Ptolemy XV Caesar “Theos Philopator Philometor”, means "the Father-loving Mother-loving God". Historically, Caesarion died in Alexandria, executed by Octavian on the advice of Arius Didymus.[1]
