Prague Castle

Prague Castle is a large castle complex located in Prague. It was built in the 9th century and served as the seat of power for numerous kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia before becoming the official residence and workplace of the president of the Czech Republic.[1]

History

Around 1592, Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II hired alchemist Edward Kelley and gave him a workshop in Prague Castle for him to continue his experiments. Kelley's daughter, Elizabeth Jane Weston, would only be allowed out of the house when her father would take her to visit the castle, for the streets were unsafe at the time, with rumors of a killer stalking around Prague even during daytime. On her tenth birthday, Elizabeth's gift was her first trip to the workshop.[2]
