Wyatt was an Anglo-Saxon thegn who lived in Colcestre during the 9th century. One of the frequent guests of Ealdorman Birstan, Wyatt was one of the lords who criticized the ealdorman for his lack of professionalism and expertise at his duty.

Biography

Little is known about his past, yet Wyatt was one of three thegns of Essexe, under the leadership of Birstan.[1]

In 875, Wyatt was in attendance at a gathering of lords at the Ealdorman's House, when he was approached by a visitor, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan. Wyatt stated he and the other lords were waiting for Birstan and that the ale was running out. After Eivor found the ealdorman and brought him back to his house, Wyatt and the other thegns started to push Birstan on his thoughts of their current dilemmas. Wyatt asked Birstan about how to pay for the upcoming Lammas Festival, and Birstan responded through Eivor's advice. After hearing no actual solutions, Wyatt and the other thegns insulted Birstan for being a hopeless ealdorman as Birstan quickly dismissed them from his house.[1]

Wyatt can be seen at the party of Birstan's, who welcomed Alfida, his lost sweetheart, into his home, after his wife, Estrid, was "kidnapped" just before.[2]
