The Temple of Poseidon was a temple dedicated to the god Poseidon, overlooking the ancient town of Heraklion in Octopus Bay in Messara, Greece.
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the town of Heraklion while looking for information about Nikios and his final adventure, as requested by his orphaned son Ardos. While in Heraklion, Kassandra's attention was drawn by the priestess outside the Temple of Poseidon. She asked her to help her retrieve the old, ceremonial Arkalochori Axe which the bandits had stolen. In return, the priestess told Kassandra a little about the Swordfish, a man who held the town in dread.[1]
Around the same time, Kassandra also found an Ainigmata Ostraka outside the temple in a small fountain.[2]
