The Temples were locations throughout the world built by Those Who Came Before, in order to prevent the repeat of the catastrophe that had led to their extinction.
History
According to Minerva, the Temples were built by the members of her race "who knew to turn away from war" – presumably meaning those who did not fight or did not want to fight in the war between the humans and Those Who Came Before.[1]
The temples were built as a way to counteract a disaster that had once before damaged the Earth, and had killed most of the humans and Those Who Came Before. Minerva tasked Desmond Miles (speaking to him through his ancestor, Ezio Auditore) with locating the Temples in modern times, and averting another cataclysm.[1]
Pythagorean Temple
- William M.: "You can sedate Desmond now, we have the information we needed."
- Unnamed Man: "It's too late, the damage is done. He seems to have entered into a coma."
- William M.: "He'll find his way out. He always has in the past."
- Unnamed Man: "I've run the data through the computer. We have a location for the temple."
- William M.: "Then what are you waiting for? Let's go."
- —William M. and an unnamed man regarding the discovery of a Temple location.[src]
The coordinates 43 39 19 N 75 27 42 W were presented to Leonardo da Vinci and Ezio in the final chamber of the Temple of Pythagoras, though they were unsure what the usefulness of the numbers were at the time.[2]
Outside of the Animus, William M. and another, unidentified person witnessed Desmond's reliving of this memory, and realized the coordinates to be the location of one of the temples.[2]
Trivia
- The coordinates match one of the markings on the map that is hidden in the Codex.
