The Temples are locations throughout the world built by both Those Who Came Before and humans, in order to prevent the repeat of the catastrophe that had ensured their extinction.
History
According to Minerva in Assassin's Creed II, the Temples were built by the members of her race "who knew to turn away from war" — presumably those who did not fight or did not want to fight in the war between the humans and Those Who Came Before . The reason for the building of these temples was an unknown catastrophe that significantly damaged the Earth and killed off most of both species. Minerva tasked Desmond Miles (speaking to him through his ancestor, Ezio Auditore) with locating the Temples in Modern Times and averting another cataclysm.
Trivia
- The Vault, which could be considered a Temple, was located both by Ezio Auditore and the other Renaissance Assassins, as well as Rodrigo Borgia in Assassin's Creed II.
- Both Minerva and Juno feature as 2 of the 8 Monteriggioni Statuettes in Assassin's Creed II. Based on this, there may be 8 Vaults all together, one for each statuette.
