The Temples are locations throughout the world built by Those Who Came Before, in order to prevent the repeat of the catastrophe that had ensured their extinction.
History
According to Minerva in Assassin's Creed II, the Temples were built by the members of her race "who knew to turn away from war" — presumably those who did not fight or did not want to fight in the war between the humans and Those Who Came Before. The reason for this was an unknown catastrophe that significantly damaged the Earth and killed off most of both species. Minerva tasked Desmond Miles (speaking to him through his ancestor, Ezio Auditore) with locating the Temples in Modern Times and averting another cataclysm. According to the Achievements that have been announced for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , they are likely to appear again, but whether or not it is Ezio or Desmond, or both, that find them currently remains unknown.
Trivia
- The Vault, which could be concidered a Temple, was located both by Ezio Auditore and the other Renaissance Assassin's, as well as Rodrigo Borgia in Assassin's Creed II.
