Tegea was an ancient Greek city located in Arcadia which served as its capital in the 5th century BCE. Unlike many of the great marble cities of Greece in the classical period, Tegea was still largely constructed of wood, a fact that contributed to the bucolic reputation of the region. A contemporary saying during the Peloponnesian War was that "there were more animals than people in Tegea".
