The Sons of Xerxes were remnants of the Persian army who remained in Greece after the defeat of King Xerxes I during the Greco-Persian Wars.

By the Peloponnesian War, the Sons of Xerxes had settled in the area surrounding the village of Lalaia in Phokis, harassing the villagers. Desperate for aid, the village sought the help of the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
