Skylax the Fair (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Peloponnesian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

Prior to the Peloponnesian War, Skylax served as a general in the Spartan Army and was married to a woman, the mother of his two children. After they died in an unknown accident, Skylax was approached by King Pausanias, who was secretly a Sage of the Cult of Kosmos. Pausanias recruited Skylax into the cult, appointing him as the leader of the Abantis Islands, a group of islands under the control of Sparta.^{[citation needed]} As a sign of his allegiance and loyalty, Skylax bore a mark of Peloponnesian royalty on his breastplate.^[1]

As the leader of the Abantis Islands, Skylax became known for his generosity,^[2] even to Lokris, to whose war effort he donated his personal wealth and a collection of fine wine.^[3] This characteristic gained him the adoration of his subjects, as well as his epithet, "The Fair".^[2]

The donation of funds to Lokris, especially the note that accompanied it, ended to be his doom, for the Spartan misthios Kassandra found the note, and learned about Skylax, his affiliation with the Cult of Kosmos, which she'd sworn to destroy. Apparently unaware of Kassandra, Skylax fell to blade.^[4]

Personality and characteristics

Though Skylax was charismatic and generous enough for the people he led to walk into war for him, Skylax himself shied away from battle.^[2] He used his vast fortune to bribe his enemies to surrender or his allies in the League to answer to him. He even made donations Lokris to ensure they allied with Sparta.^[3]

Behind the scenes

The name of Skylax, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, is most likely derived from the Ancient Greek words σκύλος ( skúlos) meaning 'skin, hide' or σκυλεύω (skyleuo) which means 'to get the spoils of war', also used specifically of stripping the armor and gear off of the fallen enemy. In modern Greek σκύλαξ (skúlax) means 'young dog, puppy'.

If Athens controls Abantis Islands while Skylax remains alive, he hides in the forest of Artemision Point in Euboea and with either just a few or no guards around, making his assassination relatively easy. Players should note that, even though he is no longer the region's leader in this scenario, having any witnesses to his assassination (including other guards) will still incur a two-to-three helmet bounty for "killing a leader."

Skylax is the only member of the Peloponnesian League branch, including its Sage, who is not defeated as a requirement of the main story.
