―Description[src]

Skylax the Fair (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Cult of Kosmos within the Peloponnesian League, during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

Skylax was the leader of the Abantis Islands, a group of islands under the control of Sparta. On the surface, he seemed like a just leader, but in reality, he worked for the branch of the cult which infiltrated the Peloponnesian League. Skylax was once a Spartan general who was married to a beautiful woman and had two loving children, but everything changed when they died in an unknown accident. This is when the Sage of the Peloponnesian League came to him promising to return his wife and children to him if he joined the Cult of Kosmos. Skylax never liked combat thinking that any battle could be won with the right amount of money. He used his vast fortune to bribe his enemies to surrender or his allies in the League to answer to him. He would even make donations to the forts in Lokris, giving them large amounts of money and various cases of wine in exchange for their allegiance.

He was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra over the course of her quest to destroy the Cult.[1]

Trivia

  • Skylax is a name most likely derived from the Ancient Greek words σκύλος ( skúlos) meaning 'skin, hide' or σκυλεύω ( skyleuo) which means 'to get the spoils of war', also used specifically of stripping the armor and gear off of the fallen enemy. In modern Greek σκύλαξ (skúlax) means 'young dog, puppy'.
  • If Athens controls Abantis Islands and Skylax has not been killed before then, he would hide in the forest in of Artemision Point in Euboea and with either just a few or no guards around, making his assassination relatively easy.
