''Skylax the Fair was revered. Because he was a generous leader, his people happily marched to battle in his name, though attacking his enemies never interested him. His power and his vast wealth seemed to be enough to keep him satisfied.''

''Skylax knew what others did not: where force failed, drachmae always won. In this way, with a massive fortune at his disposal, Skylax bribed the weaker puppet leaders in the League. For this service, Skylax prayed to Kosmos to return his lost children and wife to him. It was a prayer that would go unanswered.''

―Description[src]

Skylax the Fair (died 420s BCE) was a member of the Cult of Kosmos and of the Peloponnesian League branch during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

Skylax was the leader of the Abantis Islands, a group of islands under the control of Sparta. On the surface, he seemed like a just leader, but in reality, he worked for the branch of the cult which infiltrated the Peloponnesian League. Skylax was once a Spartan general who was married to a beautiful woman and had  two loving children, but everything changed when they died in an unknown accident. This is when the Sage of the Peloponnesian League came to him promising to return his wife and children to him if he joined the Cult of Kosmos. Skylax never liked combat thinking that any battle can be won with the right amount of money. He would use his vast fortune to bribe his enemies to surrender or to bribe his allies in the League to answer to him. He would even make donations to the forts on the island of Lokris, giving them large amounts of money and various cases of wine in exchange for their allegiance. [citation needed]

He was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra on her quest to destroy the Cult.[1]

Trivia

  • Skylax is a name most likely derived from the Ancient Greek words σκύλος ( skúlos) meaning 'skin, hide' or σκυλεύω ( skyleuo) which means 'to get the spoils of war', also used specifically of stripping the armor and gear off of the fallen enemy. In modern Greek σκύλαξ (skúlax) means 'young dog, puppy'.
