The Sinkholes of Herakles was the southern region of Argolis, Greece.
History
Myth
The Sinkholes of Herakles were named after the legendary hero Herakles, following his victory over the Nemean Lion, which he'd bested by trapping the beast in a sinkhole.[1]
The region was also, infamously, the site of death of Hippolytos, the son of another legendary hero, Theseus.[1]

The site of Hippolytos' death became a sacred place following his demise, with people bringing in offerings. Daughters of Artemis also made a campsite there.[1]
