Sargon was a Greek merchant who ran the Oikos of the Olympians within Kirrha, Phokis during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography

In 431 BCE, Sargon made the acquaintance of the Spartan misthios Kassandra and explained her how he did business. Kassandra returned later on to do business with Sargon, exchanging orichalcum for his rare merchandise.[1]

At some point in the 420s BCE, Sargon tasked Iola and her band of smugglers with smuggling a bear from Arkadia to Kos on his behalf. Unfortunately, Iola's ship was wrecked on the island of Delos, and the bear escaped onto the island's northern shore, mauling the crew to death and leaving Iola as the sole survivor.[2]

Trivia

  • The name "Sargon" is the Hebrew version of the Akkadian name "Sharru-ukin",[3] which derives from the words "Šarru", meaning 'king',[4] and "kīnu", meaning 'true, legitimate'.[5] Based on this, it is possible that Sargon is a Hellenized Assyrian, as he shares the name with several Assyrian kings including Sargon of Akkad, the founder of the Akkadian Empire.
