Potidaia: Difference between revisions

Potidaia, alternatively Potidaea (Ancient Greek: Ποτίδαια, Ποτείδαια) was an ancient Greek town located on the westernmost shore of the Chalkidike in Makedonia.

History

Founded as a colony by Korinth to make trade easier in Makedonia, Potidaia sought the help of Sparta and Korinth against Athens and their excessive demands, leading to a siege by Athens in 430 BCE. This battle served as a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War.^[1]

After receiving a letter requesting the help of the 'Eagle Bearer' in 429 BCE, the misthios Kassandra came to Potidaia only to find it under attack by Spartan soldiers, with the village slain or captured. After rescuing several civilians and meeting a man named Natakas, Kassandra was confronted by a member of the Order of the Ancients, demanding her death. After fending off several Persian guards, she departed the village with meet with Natakas.^[2]

Later on, Kassandra later learned that a mercenary called Gaia the Fist also haunted the village and its surroundings.^[3]
