A view of the Port of Piraeus

The Port of Piraeus served as the main port of Athens, Greece during the 5th century BCE. During the classical period, the port was a socially and economically separate world and played a critical role in Athens' impact as a naval power, as it was where most of the Athenian ships were built.

The city was split into three distinctive areas: military, commercial, and residential.[1]

History

During the Peloponnesian War, the Sparta misthios Kassandra helped to escort the sculptor Phidias through the port to escape from Athens to Seriphos.[2]

Some years later, when the plague stormed the city, Kassandra attempted to escape the city along with Sokrates, Hippokrates, and Aspasia through the port. Halted by soldiers following Kleon's commands, Kassandra fought them a way out.[3]

Behind the scenes

In Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the port city served as a region of Attika itself.
