The Petrified Islands is a name used for the group of Greek islands in the northeastern Aegean Sea. They included both Lesbos and Chios.
It was home to the poet Sappho, and contained the city of Mytilene, which rebelled against Athens at one point, resulting in its subjugation.[1]
Deciduous forests adorn these islands, and one in particular was held in the time of the Peloponnesian War to have been mystical. Its economy during that era specialized in wine-making.[2]
