Pentheus was the king of Thebes in the Greek myths and the grandson of Kadmos.
Biography
The most notable thing about his rule is that he forbid the worship of the god Dionysos within the city. He also spied the gathering of the god's followers, Maenads, and among them his own mother. They noticed him, too, hiding in a tree, and pulled him down and tore him limb from limb.[1]
In memory of Pentheus, a statue of Dionysos was carved from the tree in which he'd hidden, and placed in the city of Korinth in Korinthia. It was visited by the misthios Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
