What remains of Pavlopetri above water

Pavlopetri is an ancient sunken city and islet off the coast of the Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia, Greece. The oldest dwellings in the area date back to 5000 BCE, and it's believed to have sunk following a series of earthquakes.

During the Peloponnesian War the misthios Kassandra explored the depths of the city, finding among its treasures finery bearing the likeness of the hounds of Hades for the ship Adrestia.[1]

Trivia

  • The name of the place is anachronistic, apparently named for two Christian saints, but the ancient name or names for the place are not known.
