The Paros Island is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea as part of the Kyklades. Paros Harbor, a former polis, is its capital.
At the time of the Peloponnesian War, it was considered the wealthiest of the archipelago thanks to its great marble mountain and the corresponding quarries overseen by the local militia, most notable being the Fortified Marble Quarry in the middle of the island. By 429 BCE, the population of artisans working on the excavated marble had surged, but this economic boom also ensured that Paros Island paid the highest tribute to the Delian League out of all member states.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War the island was ruled by Silanos, a member of the Peloponnesian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos pretending to be an Athenian polemarch, after the untimely demise of the island's former leader. Under Silanos, Paros was even more belligerent towards its neighbor, Naxos Island, than before.[1]
Naxos' oligarch, Phoenix, sent her admiral Euneas to talk peace with Paros, but his ship was ambushed and destroyed, and Euneas as well as some of the crew were taken prisoners, tortured to betray Naxos. During his captivity, Euneas witnessed a meeting in which Silanos or some other member of the Cult participated in, wearing a mask unlike any Euneas had ever seen before.[2]
Like many islands in the area, Paros boasts a pristine environment of white, sandy beaches, azure blue waters, and cypress trees.[1]
Regions
Paros Island had only one region, Sculptor's Elysium, but the island of Atoll Point was considered part of it.
