Nikolaos of Sparta, also known as the Wolf, was a Spartan general who lived in the middle of the 5th century BCE. With Myrrine, the daughter of King Leonidas, he was the step-father of Alexios and Kassandra latter of whom would become a renowned mercenary during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
Because his step-children were descended from Leonidas, Nikolaos had high hopes for them to live up to their grandfather's fame and valor. However, a catastrophe befell the family one fateful day when the children were about a decade old, and in the aftermath, Kassandra was held responsible and was to be executed. Nikolaos steadfastly stood by this sentence and even personally attempted to carry it out, only for Kassandra to survive, and, in exile, grew up to become a legendary mercenary.[2]
In 431 BCE, Nikolaos was unexpectedly reunited with Kassandra. He revealed to her that he was not her biological father and that her mother was still alive.[3]
