Nikolai Ivanovich Rysakov (c. 1861 – 1881) was a Russian revolutionary and a member of the Narodnaya Volya, a radical faction of the Russian Brotherhood of Assassins.
Biography
As part of an attempt to overthrow the Tsarist autocracy, Nikolai and fellow members planned the assassination of Alexander II. Sensing a possible assassination attempt in 1881, a cousin of Nikolai's alerted his radical activities to the British Assassin Simeon Price, who had recruited several young apprentices in the Russian Empire some years prior. Nikolai's cousin had hoped Simeon would be able to dissuade Nikolai and the assassins of the attempt.[1]
On 13 March in Saint Petersburg, Nikolai threw his bomb that disabled the Tsar's royal carriage,[2], which allowed fellow assassin Ignacy Hryniewiecki to throw a second bomb that fatally wounded the Tsar.[3]
Nikolai attempted to escape from the scene but someone threw an object at him, which caused Nikolai to trip and fall flat on his face, resulting in his capture.[1] Nikolai was later executed by his apprehenders.[1]
