The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, abbreviated NKVD, was the law enforcement agency of the Soviet Union. It was founded in April 1917 as the direct successor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[1] Falling under the direct control of the Communist Party,[1] it was also a part of the Red Army.[2][3]
The NKVD was established to counter Russia's previous Tsarist police force, and quickly became involved in espionage, border control, and running the Gulags.[2] NKVD officers also patrolled city streets during the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War, and were one of the enemy factions encountered by the Assassin Nikolai Orelov during his quest to protect Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna.[4]
