Margit Libényi was a former rebel supporter during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. She was also the sister of János Libényi, the Hungarian tailor who attempted to kill the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.

In 1848, Margit Libényi was one of the Hungarian female citizens aiding the rebellion, but was soon captured by the Austrian army, led by Baron Julius Jacob von Haynau. She was later flogged and tortured alongside other Hungarian women, on orders from von Haynau, but continued to aid the revolutionaries after her maiming. However, once the rebellion lost, she and her brother János fled to Vienna to start anew. Yet, their location was discovered by the baron's lawyer, Karl Mayr, who started to extort János for Margit's safety.[1]

Historically, Margit was a dancer who caught the eye of the Emperor. Smitten, the emperor had singled Margit out and gave her an education at a girls' school. This happened to be a contributing factor of János' attack against the Emperor.[3]
