Herbert du Lilibonne (died 886) was a Frankish noble and duelist who lived in West Francia during the 9th century. He was the brother of Amric and Gerswinda.[1]
Biography
By the time of the Siege of Paris, the family name of Lilibone was ruined, which Gerswinda blamed on the Norse invaders. Herbert was no longer a duelist, and spent his time in an arena at Amienois surrounded by farm animals, telling old tales of glory. It was there where he met and challenged the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan to a battle to the death. Though Herbert was confident, even spouting limericks during battle, she easily defeated him.[1]
Behind the scenes
Herbert du Lilibonne is a character from the The Siege of Paris DLC for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, he was portrayed by John Tench.[2]
Etymology
Herbert is a masculine given name derived from the Old German words heri "army" and beraht "bright, famous".[3]
Du Lilibonne is a French toponymic surname, meaning "of/from Lilibonne".[4] Lilibonne, however, does not correspond to any known historical or geographical location in France and appears to be an invented or fictional place name created for the game. It is possibly a misspelling of Lillebonne, a commune in Normandy,[5] though during the 9th century it would have been known by its Latin name, Juliobona.[6]
