Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands; 1841 – 1904) was a Welsh journalist and explorer. Stanley is best known for searching for the lost explorer David Livingstone. In 1871, he found Livingstone in Ujiji in modern-day Tanzania,[1] upon which he supposedly uttered the words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"[2]
Biography
In September 1876, Henry was invited to a international conference held by King Leopold II of Belgium about exploring parts of Africa. During the conference, Henry had met with both the king and his private guest, Countess Konstanze von Visler. After their meeting, Stanley was invited back to her home in the Alps and was assigned to have Konstanze come back with him.[3]
Upon their arrival, they met with Konstanze's partner, the British Assassin Simeon Price, who was shocked to see an uninvited Stanley. He made his way up to their room and loomed over Konstanze's models. When confronted by Price, Stanley remarked of how Price had been holding her back while he readied his pistol. However, he was impacted by an iron thrown by Price before being shot. Barely conscious, Stanley was propped up by Price and later pushed onto Konstanze, who aimed a gun at Simeon. After the scuffle, both Konstanze and Stanley left the premise after the Assassins came to investigate.[3]
