Elpidios was the son of the Spartan misthios Kassandra and her partner Natakas. As a result of his parentage, he had Greek and Persian ancestry. His paternal grandfather was Darius and his maternal great-grandfather was Leonidas I of Sparta. Elpidios would also become an ancestor of Aya of Alexandria, one of the co-founders of the Hidden Ones, the precursors to the Assassins.

Biography

Elpidios was born in a period when Kassandra, Natakas, and Darius decided to stop running from the Order of the Ancients and settle in Dyme, Achaia. Wishing to start a family, Kassandra and Nataks conceived Elpidios and bought a house on the cliffs above Dyme where the family resided.^[1]

When the Order eventually tracked them down and attacked Dyme in full force, Natakas was killed and Elpidios was kidnapped, much to the dismay of both Kassandra and Darius.^[2] Kassandra followed the Order to Messenia and eventually hunted down its leader Amorges with the help of Darius. Before his death, Amorges revealed the whereabouts of Elpidios: he was being raised and nurtured by the son of Artaxerxes I of Persia on an island south of Messenia.^[3]

Elpidios was later given back to his mother, but recalling Amorges' warning that the Order would never stop hunting her due to her lineage as a "Tainted One", Kassandra realized that Elpidios would never be safe with her. As such, she made the difficult decision to abandon him for his own safety, and left him in the care of his grandfather Darius.^[3]

Darius became a guardian to Elpidios, taking him to Egypt to lead a new life. Elpidios would eventually become an ancestor to Aya of Alexandria^[3] and her son Khemu.^[4]

Behind the scenes

The name Elpidios (Ἐλπίδιος) is derived from the Greek word ἐλπῐ́ς (elpís), which means 'hope'. Elpidios subsequently means 'hope, hopeful'.
