Delos is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. Alongside its sister island, Mykonos, Delos formed the Silver Islands.

Given its enormous religious significance for the ancient Greeks, the island as a whole was regarded as a holy sanctuary, a status reinforced by its enchantingly picturesque environment. Its influence became even more immense when the Delian League was established because its Grand Temple of Apollo housed the alliance's silver treasury.[1]

History

Mythology

In Greek mythology, Delos was where Leto, cursed by Hera so that she couldn't give birth on solid ground, gave birth to the twin deities Artemis and Apollo.[1]

Peloponnesian War

In 454 BCE, Perikles forcibly relocated the silver of Delos to Athens, stoking the resentment of the Delian leaders who furiously aspired to have them returned.[1] During the Peloponnesian War a corrupt strongman Podarkes, ruled the Silver Islands, leading some of the population to rebel against him. The rebellion's leader, Kyra, sent out requests for aid to both the misthios Kassandra, as well as Sparta.[2]
