Moina Mathers (1865 – 1928), born Mina Bergson, was the wife of Samuel Liddell Mathers and the "Seeress" of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. She was also a member of the British Assassins for some time.
Biography
Early life
Moina was born in Geneva, Switzerland, to a Polish Jewish father and an Anglo-Irish Jewish mother; her brother, Henri, would later become a notable philosopher. During her childhood, her family moved throughout Europe, eventually settling in London. As she was artistically talented, Moina joined the Slade School of Fine Art at the age of fifteen, where she met and befriended Annie Horniman, an Assassin, who introduced her to the order. Moina liked the Assassins' idea of free thoughts since she never had a strong religious belief herself, and so she became a member of the group.[1]
In 1887, the Assassins asked Moina to pretend to take interest in Samuel Mathers, who was about to establish his own occult secret society, knowing that he was funded by the Templars. During that time, the Templars were seeking a book somewhere in London, as it was believed to contain powerful knowledge.[1]
Eventually, Moina and Samuel married and he founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn along with two associates, William Robert Woodman and William Wynn Westcott. After Woodman's mysterious assassination, Westcott and Mathers fought for control of the group. Around this instance, the Assassins asked Moina to end her relationship and rejoin them, but she refused.[1]
As the Seeress

Moina's title of the Seeress was quite appropriate, since, after Woodman's death, only she and Aleister Crowley were able to see the man in his supernatural form. Her husband, the Imperator of the order, therefore frequently used her ability in order to communicate with Woodman.[2]
In 1901, the Seeress conducted a sexual ritual with the corpse of Woodman, in the hope that it would enable her and her husband to control the disembodied being. However, this failed.[2] Some time later, when Mathers died under mysterious circumstances at the age of 64, Moina took his place at the head of Alpha et Omega, a new secret order.[1]
Legacy
In 2015, the Templar Isabelle Ardant included her name on a list of known British Assassins. This list was later unveiled by the Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings when they infiltrated Ardant's office to plant a bug.[3]
Personality and traits
Frater V.O.V. compared Moina's personality and appearance to that of Maria Amiel. Moina suspected that the Templars were secretly guiding her life. [citation needed]
