Herat Citadel

The Herat Citadel, also known as the Citadel of Alexander, is a large fort located in the center of Herat, Afghanistan.

Layout[edit | edit source]

The citadel is fashioned in the shape of an older, rectangular compound to the east, about 18 meters by 42 meters, protected with thirteen towers, all made of fired bricks, called the Upper Citadel. The Lower Citadel has lower walls of baked bricks and has a polygonal shape about 25 by 60 meters, with nine circular towers. In the light of the dawning sun, the citadel looks like a gigantic sand castle.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Supposedly built around 330 BCE, when Alexander the Great arrived in the area, the citadel served as a military stronghold for many empires for over two millennia.[1]

British soldiers on one of the citadel's walls

In 1841, the Herat Citadel was occupied by British soldiers under the command of Major General and Master Templar William Sleeman, who wanted to access the Isu Temple underneath the structure. At the same time, the Indian Assassin Arbaaz Mir infiltrated the fortress with the very same purpose,[2] using the battle raging outside its walls as a distraction for the guards.[3]

By the mid-20th century, the citadel had been left in despair so much that it came close to destruction. It was soon progressively restored by various organizations and businesses up to 2011.[1]
