The Austrian Empire was a multinational great power in Central Europe that ruled from 1804 to 1867. It was formed out of proclamation of the realms of the Habsburg Empire.
History[edit | edit source]
Attempt on Emperor Franz I[edit | edit source]
On 18 February 1853, Emperor Franz Joseph I was walking alongside his aide in the streets of Vienna when he was attacked by a disgruntled Hungarian tailor, János Libényi, who slashed the emperor's neck with a kitchen knife.[1] Before he could do more harm, János' friends, the butcher Joseph Ettenreich and soldier "Jack Straw," restrained him as he became numb.[2]
While the emperor ultimately survived the assassination attempt, the aide arrested János and thanked Ettenreich and Straw for their aid. Within the week, János was hanged for his attempted regicide.[2] Unknown to most, János was influenced to take action by a mysterious figure called the "Magus", who actually wanted the tailor to test out one of his inventions.[3]
