Thespis (fl. 424 BCE – 422 BCE) was an Athenian actor and friend of Aristophanes who lived during the late 5th century BCE.
History
In around 424 BCE, he was involved in a plot, alongside Aristophanes, to sabotage the reputation of Kleon, the leader of the Delian League and a Sage of the Cult of Kosmos.[1]
Later in 422 BCE, he was present in Elis to conduct a play potraying King Leonidas I of Sparta. [citation needed]
Trivia
- Historically, Thespis is recognised as the first person ever to appear on stage as an actor playing a character in a play (instead of speaking as him or herself). Thespis lived during the 6th century BCE, making his presence in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey anachronistic, if indeed he is meant to be the same individual at all.
- The word thespian is derived from the historical individual's name.
