The Monger

The Monger (died 431 BCE) was a member of the Peloponnesian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos in Korinth, Greece, during the Peloponnesian War.

He was eventually hunted down and killed by the Spartan misthios Kassandra in her quest to destroy the Cult.

Biography

During the mid-440s BCE the Monger came into contact with Myrrine, who was causing trouble in The Monger's operation of taking over Korinth. He threatened her with death if she refused to stay away.[1]

By the time of the Peloponnesian War the Monger had taken over the city of Korinth. The city and the region that was once the richest and most prosperous port in Greece was swallowed by corruption, enough for people to whisper about Korinthia being the "Land of Beautiful Corruption".[2]

While looking for her mother, Kassandra came across Anthousa, a hetaera who needed help in getting rid of the Monger. He, along with the Cult's help, employed a small army and took over the land of Korinth and has ruled over it with an iron fist ever since. He would use the army of thugs he hired to mug and shake people down for their money, even going after and killing the hetaerae working in the streets, including Damalis and Erinna. The Monger was also known to smuggle weapons into the port of Korinth and store them in a warehouse in the Port of Lechaion where they would eventually be sold to soldiers participating in the war. [citation needed]

After helping the hetaerae and destroying the warehouse full of weapons, Kassandra killed the Monger, bringing an end to his tyrannical rule in Korinth.[1]

Trivia

  • In the novel the Monger is killed in his warehouse by Kassandra and Brasidas with the help of Roxana and Erinna, two of Anthousa's hetaerae who had been captured. His remains were then displayed publicly by Kassandra and Anthousa at the theater against Brasidas' wishes.
  • In the game if Kassandra kills the Monger in the Sacred Cave, Lagos will provide evidence on the Sage of the Peloponessian League. However, if the Monger is killed at the theater, Lagos will provide no evidence, and die fighting Kassandra and thus will make it impossible to successfully accuse Pausanias of Sparta.
