Sulke

Sulke was a Norse merchant who lived during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Originally from the village of Heillboer in Rygjafylke, Sulke fled from the settlement during a raid conducted by Kjotve the Cruel that led to deaths of numerous villagers, including Eivor's parents Rosta and Varin. When the settlement was subsequently abandoned, Sulke returned and looted what valuables he could find in order to sell them for a living; among these items was a helmet that had formerly belonged to Varin.[1]

By 872, Sulke had opened a shop in Stavanger, where he was visited by a now adult Eivor. As the Viking observed the items that Sulke had on display, she recognized her father's helmet while Sulke in turn deduced Eivor's identity. Accused of betraying Heillboer, Sulke fled, fearing for his life. However, Eivor caught up easily, and Sulke tried to plead his case, claiming he had no involvement with Kjotve's raid.[1]

As Eivor accused Sulke of dishonoring the dead, the latter insisted that he had done what was necessary to ensure his survival. He then allowed Eivor to take anything she wanted from his shop in exchange for sparing his life, and gave her a key to his chest.[1]
