The Republic of China, commonly known as Taiwan, is a state East Asia and one of two to claim sovereignty over China.
It was founded on 1 January 1912 upon the overthrow of the Qing, the last imperial dynasty of China, by the revolutionary Sun Yat-sen. In the political fragmentation that followed from 1915 to 1928, it was confined to southern China and governed by Sun's Nationalist Party of China (KMT) with which it was synonymous. Under Sun's successor, Chiang Kai-shek, the KMT made a strong push north to reunify the country, reaching Shanghai in 1927 where, in a pivotal choice, Chiang spontaneously turned against his communist allies and massacred its civilian supporters in the streets. This led to the split with the Communist Party of China that ignited the Chinese Civil War. The KMT's defeat in 1949 resulted in their exile to the island of Taiwan, where to the present day, they remain, having established themselves as a thriving state and economy. Despite the small territory it still holds onto, the Republic of China continues to claim sole rule over all of China in opposition to its Marxist-Leninist archenemy, the People's Republic of China who retains control over Mainland China and regards Taiwan as its own province in turn.
