The Northern Expedition (1926–1928) was Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's military campaign to unify China under the Kuomintang (KMT). It is so named because it was a northward push from the KMT's base in Guangdong to Shanghai and beyond, with the ultimate aim of capturing Beijing, the internationally recognized capital.[1] While the expedition was a monumental step in ending the Warlord Era, Chiang's bloody purge of the KMT's communist allies in Shanghai in April 1927 only precipitated the next phase in the nation's internal travails, the Chinese Civil War.[1][2]
