Wording is misleading. "First global empire" is a bit subjective and disputable. So is "longest-lasting". If we're dating the end of this empire to Macau returning to China, why can't we say the French Empire still exists when they control French Polynesia or the British Empire still exists with its remaining Overseas Territories, or the American Empire exists since they refuse to grant either Puerto Rico statehood or independence?

The Portuguese Empire was one of the first overseas European colonial empires. Notable Portuguese colonies included Brazil, Príncipe, Mozambique, and the city-state of Macau.
