Biography
Very little was known about Fraser, except that as part of the 17th Lancers, he participated in the indecisive Battle of Balaclava in 1854. After surviving the encounter, Oliver deserted army and travelled southwards, where he eventually sought refuge at a villa in Lake Como, Italy. It was during his stay that he encountered the villa's owner, Laura, and Simeon Price, a fellow British soldier who deserted the military during the sinking of the HMS Birkenhead. Both compared their reasons and their similar circumstances of desertion.[1]
One stormy night, Fraser and his fellow acquaintances met another guest, Felice Orsini, who described his escape from prison and his revolutionary ideals. As Laura and Simeon go to sleep, Fraser spent the night drinking with Orsini. The next morning, once Italian soldiers came and searched for Orsini, Fraser and the other guests prepared to eliminate them quickly. However, as Orsini caused a scene by being caught escaping again, Fraser and Price came to help by killing the soldiers surrounding the villa. Luckily, all the soldiers were dealt with as all cleaned up the mess. Oliver helped Simeon move the bodies and Laura cleaned the villa, while Felice left immediately.[1]
After fixing themselves and the villa, Fraser drank with his fellow guests in celebration of surviving. However, Fraser revealed that a drunk Orsini spoke about his escape with the aid of a "Magus." Being pushed by Price for more information, Fraser stated that Orsini may be headed to Paris to meet with more revolutionaries, which gave Price his next objective.[1]
