Olav the Unlucky was a Norse guide under the command of Gorm Kjotvesson, until Gorm locked him up for trading with the natives of Vinland, the Kanien'kehá:ka. Afterwards, Olav lived and interacted with the natives as he became situated in a cave under a waterfall in their settlement.

Biography

A traveler to Vinland, Olav was one of many workers brought to Vinland under Gorm, who led his search for the site that coincided with his Crystal Ball. Olav was first mentioned by a Norseman to be missing when Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan first arrived on the shores of Vinland. Although Olav worked as a guide to deliver fresh material for Gorm, the shoremaster, Hilde, told the Norseman that they will find him. Although Eivor offered to help find him, Hilde reminded her of her place as a worker, not a tracker.[1]

When investigating around Nyhofn, Eivor gathered intel from the surroundings and its people that Olav was locked in a storage room after conducting unsanctioned trading. After finding the store room, Eivor saw that Olav had escaped his chains and that he left a trail of blood behind. As she followed the trail around the viewpoint of Tiotenontatierénhton, Eivor found herself entering the settlement of Karonhiakèn:iate'. After passing through the natives, Eivor came across and talked to two village leaders, Konwahawíhshon and Karonhiaktátie'. Despite the village leaders not knowing how to speak Norse or Saxon or Eivor not knowing how to speak Kanienʼkéha, the tension between the two groups diminished as Sýnin landed on Eivor's arm. Seeing how Eivor's raven trusted her, both village leaders showed Eivor a certain path through their village. As Konwahawíhshon led the way, Eivor started to hear ramblings of a madman coming from the waterfall. There, Konwahawíhshon introduced Eivor to Olav. As Konwahawíhshon left them to talk, Olav first believed that Eivor came to kill him. Eivor disagreed with the notion. Elated, Olav introduced himself as "Olav the Unlucky," but protested the 'unlucky' part as he escaped custody and a worse fate from Gorm. Within the conversation, Eivor admitted to wanting to find Gorm and settling their feud between them. Happy, Olav decided to show Eivor of how Gorm organized his campsites and where Gorm might be. Olav also hinted that within the woods and at these camps that Eivor might want to garner some supplies from them to trade and obtain better weapons and armor.[2]

During her search to kill Gorm, Eivor was injured by a pack of wolves and brought back to settlement to heal. Once Karonhiaktátie' gave her elderberries to heal, Eivor exited the healing hut and Olav waited for her outside. Olav let Eivor know that these berries were around the forest for her to eat and replenish anytime she wanted. Back on track, Eivor went through every camp and outpost she could find and this ultimately led her to Narfljot Camp. After obtaining a visual of Gorm, Eivor intruded into the camp and then assassinated Gorm. Afterwards, Eivor travelled back to Karonhiakèn:iate' to deliver the good news to Olav.[3]

After delivering the good news to Olav, Eivor was invited by Olav to attend the nightly storytime of the village. After coming in the middle of Konwahawíhshon's story, Eivor sat down and listened, despite not knowing the language. Eivor was offered to speak her story and she recounted the story of how Odin lost his son, Baldr, to the tricks and schemes of Loki. After her story, Eivor brought out the Crystal Ball she obtained from Gorm and decided to leave it in the hands of village leaders before leaving. At the shores, Eivor met with Hilde and told her of her real name and intentions of coming to Vinland. Within their conversation, Olav shouted to his sister and both Olav and Hilde embraced each other. Olav let Hilde know that Eivor killed Gorm and he had no longer needed to hide. As Hilde and Eivor stated that there is no monetary gain from staying here, Olav stated he will stay for a season or two in this land with his new friends. Understanding, Eivor stated her farewells to Olav as she and Hilde readied the longship to leave for home.[4]
