Níðhǫggr (also spelled Níðhöggr, often anglicized as Nidhogg), was a dragon or serpent in Norse mythology.
Mythology
Níðhǫggr was said to live beneath the giant tree of Yggdrasil gnawing on its roots. Ratatoskr, a mythical squirrel, ran as messenger along the tree trunk between the eagle at the top and Níðhǫggr at the bottom.[1]
Biography
When Odin travelled beneath Yggdrasil to the Well of Urðr, he noted that the caves were large and mused that Níðhǫggr must have been busy.[2]
