Melissa was a beekeeper nymph in Greek mythology.
Melissa was the very first to harvest honey. Along with her sister Adrasteia, she took care of a young Zeus on Mount Ida. She is also known for being initiated to the mysteries of Demeter by the goddess herself, though she was killed by humans for refusing to reveal their secrets. In a rage, Demeter provoked an epidemic, calling forth clouds of bees from Melissa's body.[1]
