Melanthos (died c. 420s BCE) was a member of the Gods of the Aegean Sea branch of the Cult of Kosmos.
Biography
As the son of the leader of Messara, Melanthos sought to follow his father to the same position.[1][2] While his father still lived, however, Melanthos was content to bide his time, haunting the waters around Krete and the Volcanic Islands aboard his trireme, the Kronos.[3]
Ambitious to a fault, Melanthos also sought glory among the ranks of the Cult of Kosmos, proclaiming his goal to "be a son to Kosmos." One step on the way was to become the Sage of his branch, the Gods of the Aegean Sea. He was encouraged in this by his peer, The Mytilenian Shark, who mentioned in a letter to Melanthos that he had "the blood of a true leader."[4]
To impress his father and prove himself to him, Melanthos sank ships. After sinking a small fleet, he sent a letter to his father, telling him that he understood what his father had meant as his crew had looked up to him with fear. In that same letter, Melanthos announced his intention to follow in his father's footsteps, and with him as the leader of Messara, Messarans would "know true fear."[2]
After, Melanthos sailed west, following the acting Sage of his branch, The Hydra.[5]
However, while still in the waters between Krete and Kythera Island, Melanthos crossed paths with the Spartan misthios Kassandra and her ship, the Adrestia. In the ensuing scuffle, Kronos was sunk, and Melanthos slain.[6]
