Amritsar is a city in north-west India and the spiritual centre of the Sikh religion in the state of Punjab.
History
The city was founded by Guru Ram Das, who gave it the name Amritsar, after a sacred lake constructed in 1574. That same year, he picked the site and ordered the construction of the Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the "Golden Temple". The construction would not be completed until 1604, 23 years after his death.[1]
Ram Das' successor, Guru Arjan, would go on to construct another sacred site in the city, on the same location where the first guru, Guru Nanak, would go to meditate.[1]

In 1841, the East India Company, under the Templars' influence, increased their presence in the city to search for the Isu ruins located underneath the late Ranjit Singh's summer palace.[3] After kidnapping the Assassin Mentor Hamid and stealing the Koh-i-Noor he safeguarded,[4] the Master Templar William Sleeman accessed the Isu temple and used the Koh-i-Noor in conjunction with a Precursor box to produce a map pointing to another temple in Afghanistan.[5]
However, the Templars' plans were sabotaged by Arbaaz Mir, who rescued Hamid and confronted Sleeman inside the Isu ruins, inadvertently leading to their destruction.[5] Later, Arbaaz retrieved the Koh-i-Noor and the Precursor box from the Templars, prompting Sleeman to seize the summer palace and take Princess Pyara Kaur hostage in a plot to recover the Pieces of Eden. Although he managed to retrieve the box, Arbaaz rescued Pyara and escaped with the Koh-i-Noor, which he gave to the British Assassin Ethan Frye to hide.[6]
