Keos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.

Some time earlier than the Peloponnesian War, the island was besieged by pirates and its main city lay in ruins by then. Also, all inhabitants older than 60 had been forced to drink deadly hemlock to ensure the survival of the rest of the population.
