Iola was a Greek smuggler from Arkadia who operated during the Peloponnesian War.
Biography
During her travels, Iola at some point lost her left eye, and took to the habit of wearing an eye patch.[1]
She and her crew smuggled a bear from Arkadia to Kos for a man named Sargon. However, a storm which she attributed to Poseidon shipwrecked their vessel on the northern shores of Delos. In the wreckage, the bear escaped and mauled Iola and her crew. Iola managed to escape to the nearby Sanctuary of Apollo, where she made the acquaintance of the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
After Kassandra helped Iola deal with the bear, Iola met Barnabas at the Temple of Apollo on the island. When Kassandra met her again at the celebrations following the overthrow of the Athenian rule, Iola and Barnabas told her that it was love at first sight, and Iola swore to leave the life of a smuggler behind her.[2]
