Hermippos (died 431 BCE) was a member of the Eyes of Kosmos branch of the Cult of Kosmos, operating in Athens of Attika Greece during the 5th century BCE. He was son of Lysis and brother of Myrtilos.

Biography

Hermippos found his calling in life in theater and the Cult of Kosmos. The former helped him in the designs of the latter, for Hermippos used the theater to influence the Athenians' and accuse Perikles, the leader of Athens, of weakness and cowardice. He lived in Athens, in the house deemed one of the most beautiful houses in the whole city. During the day, though, he could be found within the Lame One's Temple in Athens.^[1]

When the Spartan misthios Kassandra set out to demolish the Cult of Kosmos, Hermippos became one of her targets.^[2]

Kassandra came across Sokrates arguing with a playwright named Aristophanes who was angry at Hermippos for badmouthing Perikles at one of his plays. After the discussion, Aristophanes tracked Kassandra to find Hermippos at his residence since he was nowhere to be found. At the residence, Kassandra found a cultist mask indicating that Hermippos' identity a member of the Cult of Kosmos.^{[citation needed]}

After Kassandra had killed Hermippos, she found the word "Nyx" etched onto his gloves. Whether this was an act of fealty or provocation, this clue served to bring her closer to the Sage of the Eyes of Kosmos.^[2]

Correspondence

Hermippos sent a letter to his fellow Eye, The Master, urging the Master to be patient, and telling him that Hermippos' contact "a fort captain who feeds me information" had promised that Attika would soon fall.

Said captain, however, seemed to lack Hermippos' company, according to his letter which Kassandra found at Fort Phyle. In it, the captain bemoaned the fact that despite Hermippos' promises, his bed was cold.^[1]

Trivia

In the novel Hermippos dies at sea, drowning alongside three other cultists, their ship cleaved by the Adrestia as Kassandra flees Athens for Argolis in search of Hippokrates just after he attempted to poison her at Perikles's Symposium.
