Alexander II Nikolaievich (Russian: Александр II Николаевич; 1818 – 1881), born Alexander Nikolaievich Romanov, also known as Alexander the Liberator, was the Emperor of the Russian Empire from 3 March 1855 until his assassination in 1881, the King of Congress Poland, and the Grand Duke of Finland. Secretly, he was influenced by the Templar Order.[1] He was succeeded by his son Alexander III.
During his reign, Alexander made several reforms in an attempt to end serfdom in Russia. These reforms were highly unpopular, drawing criticism from both the nobility and those who believed that the reforms were not going far enough.[2] Feeling that the Tsar's promises were falling flat, a group of revolutionaries as the People's Will eventually began plotting his murder.[3]
Despite numerous failed attempts that began in 1866 with a botched shooting by the Russian Assassin Dmitry Karakozov,[3] the Assassins Ignacy Hryniewiecki[4] and Nikolai Rysakov[5] succeeded in killing Alexander in 1881 with a bomb attack on the imperial carriage in Saint Petersburg.[1]
