In 48 BCE, Eryx was commissioned by soldiers from the nearby Anthylla Outpost to build war chariots for the pharaoh Ptolemy XIII. However, when Eryx did so, the soldiers offered to pay half the agreed price. Eryx refused to accept the payment and was cut down by the soldiers, who then stole his chariot.
